How to Install Apps Safely on Android
Most people never need to leave the Play Store. Here's how to keep app installs safe.
1. Use the Google Play Store by default
It's pre-installed, every app is scanned by Play Protect, and updates are automatic. This covers virtually every app a normal user needs.
2. Keep Play Protect on
Open the Play Store → profile → Play Protect → make sure scanning is enabled. It also scans sideloaded apps when you install them — a useful last line of defense.
3. Don't enable "install unknown apps" casually
Android asks per-app permission for sideloading. If you enabled it once for a legitimate reason, go back to Settings → Apps → Special app access → Install unknown apps and turn it off again.
4. For open-source apps, go to the source
F-Droid and official GitHub releases pages are the legitimate exceptions — but always verify you're on the real project page, not a lookalike. Never trust a rehosted APK, as our safety breakdown explains. Start from our homepage guide if you're new to this.
